Ideal World

Ideal World

What does an ideal world look like in your mind?

What could you do to make it a reality?

My ideal world would have no racism and skin colour didn't matter not will it ever matter. Homelessness would be a thing and there would be no habitat loss nor would there be deforestation. There would be no slavery and everyone would have decent meals each day and no one would go hungry. Everyone would have decent pay and no one would go out of pocket. There would be no pollution nor the fear of losing innocent animal/creature to extinction. There would be no animal abuse and no war between country. Everyone would have access to free medical care and free education.

To make a difference, I'm going to cut down on plastic products and not use products that test on animals or harm animal in the process.

Volcanoes, Earth and Earthquakes

Image result for earthquakesSimple Earth:

Well, there are four layers of the Earth: The Crust, The Mantle, The outer Core and The Inner Core. The Inner Core is EXTREMELY hot and is the hottest part of the Earth. In fact, the Inner Core can go up to 5500c degrees!

Earthquake!!!:

So first before I talk about Earthquakes we have to know what causes them. There are two tectonic plates that run under New Zealand, One being the Indo-Australian and the other is the Pacific tectonic plate. So what causes an Earthquake? An Earthquake is caused when tectonic plates move, there is a divergent boundary (when the crust pulls apart), Convergent boundary (when two plates come together) and the Transform boundary (when two plates slide past each other)
The Convergent boundary has two categories, there is the Oceanic Continental boundary and that is denser than the Continental-Continental boundary. The damage of Earthquake all depends on their depth and where they are located.

Erupting Volcano:
Volcanoes are torturous. When one goes off YOU BETTER RUN. How is a Volcano formed? Well, when Magma from within the Earth's mantle makes its way to the surface, it erupts to form lava. Over time the Volcano can erupt over and over again, this makes it bigger and stronger. Volcanoes are usually formed where the tectonic plates meet.  When lava flows out slowly, a rock called Basalt is formed when called down but when it spews out, a rock called Pumice is formed.
The word 'volcano originally comes from the name of the Roman god of fire, Vulcan.
The Ring of Fire is where over 75% of Earths volcanoes are found.

Related imageOn Wednesday the 30th of October, my friend and I made a Volcano cake for our experiment. This task took us over three hours to do as we needed to make, cook and ice the two-layered cake.

If you are interested in the ingredients and method we used, HERE you go.

English and Scottish treaty

I have been researching about the treaty between England and Scotland. There were wars leading up to these events in 1707. This treaty is still in place today. we have been researching treats as we have been learning about the Treaty of Waitangi. Most treaties have the same basic outline just like the Treaty of Waitangi and the treaty between England and Scotland.
We should celebrate the day our treaty was signed because it is part of our history.

Population change in New Zealand 1836-1901

In Social studies, we have been learning about what happened when the Europeans arrived in New Zealand and what happened. This graph shows the population change in Maori and Europeans. When the Europeans arrived the Maori population basically died off because of the introduced muskets (guns) and because they fought over land.

Maori Religion

What is the idea of Mythology/stories in religion, and the role myths and stories play in society?

  • To help understand their cultures and beliefs
  • Educate people
  • To explain people the unknown
  • To spread storeys of our ancestors

What similarities are there between the myths and stories of Màori and the first British Missionaries?

  • They both had beliefs
  • Both had gods
  • Both were interested in trade
  • Both arrived on boats
Why would difference between Màori beliefs and English beliefs cause conflict?

  • Both believed strongly in their religion which causes conflict
  • Maori's were treated differently compared to the Europeans
  • Different morals/ believes
  • Different ways of worshipping gods

Our Stone Age Art

Our Stone Age Art

In social studies, we have been learning and researching about cave people. My group and I were learning about the Neolithic age. Today we painted with our hands and sticks to paint a story and to paint what we think the Neolithic people would have done.

In the Neolithic age, the people used dirt or charcoal with spit or animal fat to paint on walls of caves.
My friends and were painting people and doing handprints. I interpreted that handprints mean you own that or that it's yours. The people that I drew were my friends.

How well did we work as a team?
This time we did poorly with timing as one person was away and another student didn't know how to do much, nor the dishes but we help them out.

How did the product taste?
I didn't like the smell and was not keen on trying it but my mother liked it. The food smelt to me like cat food.

what to improve on?
We (our team) need to be quicker with setting up and managing time more efficiently.

As you can see, there are a lot of numbers. Though these are our results. These numbers would eventually help us with the discussion.

Discussion:
From the average length and time, we were able to find the velocity ( the speed). Using these numbers (photos above), we were (Sam) able to calculate the averages. The averages were the most important of all because we could find out more through these numbers. Sam did her magic to smoosh all of the data into a small group of averages. As you can see, The photo under this is what the amazing Sam produced and helped us out with.
Speed= change in distance/change in time

Acceleration= change in velocity (speed)/change in time

Lemon battery

Equipment:
Orange
Lemon
Copper nail
Zinc nail
Voltmeter
Switch
Alligator clip
Knife
Light bulb

Method:

  1.  Grab your lemon and roll it around for a few seconds to create more juice.
  2. After that make a small cut on both ends of the lemon, it's important that the cuts are far apart as possible so nothing doesn't touch.
  3. Insert copper-nail at one end of the lemon and the zinc nail at the other end.
  4. You can now use the alligator clip and voltmeter!
  5. Now its a battery!

Results:

Discussion:

The reaction that is happening is called Redox (reduction-oxidation). We built a circuit out of lemons (and oranges), zinc and copper-nail, Aligator clips and a voltmeter. In the circuit, the electrons were able to flow around. The electrons were flowing anti-clockwise, from the zinc to the copper because zinc is more reactive so it lets go of more electrons. Zinc releases the negative electrons to copper and zinc builds the positives. Once the electrons move from the zinc, zinc now becomes zinc 2+. The zinc 2+ now move around in the lemon juice. once zinc loses the electrons, it doesn't want the electrons back, so it flows around in the lemon. Only negative charges can be lost and postitive charges cant be lost. Citric acid dissociates (brakes down) to give a positively charged hydrogen ion. These ions are electrolytes that can conduct electricity (electricity is the movement of charge). Therefore the lemons provide current and voltage.

Evaluation:
During the experiment, a lot of things went wrong such as the lemon nor the orange made the light glow. The highest volts we got up to was 0.7 volts.  We needed 2-3 volts for the light to glow. We don't know why it didn't work but we think that the lemon and the orange didn't have enough acidity for the electrons to build-up. Another factor is that we didn't clean off the rust very well. we could have waited for a few days for the lemon to gain more sourness to gain more electrons. Some of the electrons were lost when we cut the orange in half, some of the juice was lost therefore some electron were lost. To gain more electrons we should have waited a day or two for it ripen or to be overripe to get more juice and electrons moving.

Making Vegetarian Sushi

Vegetarian Sushi

How well did we work as a team?
This time our team worked well together, even though we were quite slow, we did it together.

what to improve on?
Well, I could improve my skills with making sushi. We could also work faster as a group.

What is the next step?
Next steps are to work faster and efficiently as a group. this week we are making pizza.

What are my thoughts on how we did the Vegetarian Sushi?
I don't like sushi and so I didn't eat it but my friend ate mine and they said they liked it.

NOTE: When sushi is made, it HAS to be eaten that day.

This photo of the sushi is what it looked like, sadly we didn't take a photo of our ones.

Screen and Device Usage in Our Class/ Whos More Addicted?

For the last week or so, our class have been learning about devices. We have been learning about the impact of new aged technology. Over the past weekend, most of us downloaded an app that counted the hours that we spent on our phones. If we were on another device we had to manually count the hours we spent on it. The recommended screen time for a teenager is 2 hours. Everybody in our class doubles that completely. The new age of technology is rotting our brains but devices are so adiccting.

Are humans to blame for certain animal extinctions?- ESSAY

Are humans to blame for certain animal extinctions? I believe that humans caused a lot of animals to go extinct for example there is the thylacine ( Tasmanian tiger). The full reason for then going extinct is unknown but part of their extinction was because humans hunted them because they were eating livestock. So basically we hunted them to extinction. The last known living thylacine lived in Hobart zoo for 3 years after being captured from the wild, it died on the 7th of September 1936. The thylacine is a great example of how humans drove them to extinction way before the technology we have now.

To be exact, humanity has wiped out about 60% of animal populations since 1970. What animals have gone extinct because of us you may be thinking? Well, there is the Thylacine, the Pinta Giant Tortise, New Zealand's South Island Kokako, The Dodo, Moa and many more. These extinctions are a result of potching/ hunting, loss of habitat and global warming. If we continue to hunt endangered animals for trophies and food, then we are going to continue to wipe out populations in mass. Do you want to be part of that? Or do you want to be part of the solution?

Factors that animals are facing because of us are saddening. We are either part of the solution or part of the problem. Because of us, animals are being wiped out because of climate change, poaching and loss of habitat. Why are they losing their homes? They are losing their home because us greedy humans that want substances like palm oil to make that chocolate that you like, that popcorn that is finger-licking good and that conditioner that makes your hair soft and shiny. Yes, we enjoy these luxury goods but do you know where it has come from and what animals it is causing to go extinct? No, not really.

What are my thoughts on animal extinction cause my humans? Well, by my investigating on the internet, there are so many things we could do but we aren't. Such things like palm oil are used in so many products that we can't get away from and sustainable things are more expensive. Plastic is everywhere, bottles, food packaging and straws. Straws are killing turtles and other plastic is killing our ocean wildlife. That affects me, you and your mum. I think that this is sickening and disgraceful in the way that a lot of us think that we can't do anything about it. In reality, we can make a change, I can make a change and you can make a change.

Did you know that 99% of endangered species are at risk from human activities, introduced species and global warming? This was an eye-opening essay to write and find out information, I hope we can find a way to slow down animal extinction. This persuasive essay explains what is happening and what needs to happen. Will you be part of the solution or part of the problem?

Children of blood and bone essay

Do all Humans deserve to be treated equally?
Well, in the book Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi,
Amari the daughter of the ruthless of Orisha what the victim of the subject
because of her Father ( King Saran) was a ruthless, overpowering
ruler that only cared about himself.

In Chapter 9, Zelie miss judged Amari because of her family background
and her heritage. This is shown when in chapter 9 when Zelie drags Amari
into the fire because she sees Amari’s father in her. Amari screams but Zelie
doesn't want a bar of it. Zelie hates Amari’s family because her father and his
men killed thousands of Maji’s. At this, Amari and Zelie bearly know each other
and don't understand one another nor do they understand that they are different
from their family's. although, like the hunger games both people are from
different families and different backgrounds. Zelie and Amari just met and
Zelie already has a hatred towards Amari because of her family.

In chapter 45, Zelie judges Inan (Amari’s brother) and treats her like the rest
of their family. Like when Zelie says “Your people, your guards.
They’re nothing more than killers, rapists and thieves.
The only difference between them and criminals is the uniforms they wear.”
Zelie categorises all of Inan’s and Amari’s family and people as criminals
and terrorist just because of what King Saran (their father) and his guards
have done to the Majis. Does Zelie not know that there are more fish in the sea?
That there are more than evil? Well, she soon finds out.

Well, in chapter 41 Inan finally sees how evil and heartless his father is.
When Inan cuffs Zelie’s wrist tight, he said to himself “I let go of her wrists,
but inside I let go of so much more. Father’s tactics. His Orïsha. Everything
I now realize I don’t want to be”. He wants to be King of Orisha, a better king
for Orisha. Inan wants a better Orisha, An Orisha that gets along and doesn't
fight but his father is still in power and his father wants the opposite.
You see, Inan has never been out of the castle and has never experienced new
people and people with different views but since he had been out he wants to
do better for Orisha. His duty has always been to Orisha but he wants Orisha
to be a better place for all and so no one suffers.

In conclusion, Amari and Inan finally see what the rest of Orisha is like
and wants to change what their father wants. Zelie could see past all history
and now is trying to save her people and Inan wants the best for Orisha.
People deserve forgiveness if they earn it and we need to stop judging books
by their covers.

My Food Bag Semester

The design process:

What was my profile target?
My profile target was a 25-year-old who is allergic to egg. I got this idea from myself as when I was younger, I was highly allergic to egg so I wanted to find more recipes and try more out.

What was my recipe decision based on?
My decision was based on mainly budget and because I had previously made Green Thai Curry before. I felt like it would be a good recipe to make and it was also a family altered Green Thai Curry.

My recipe for Green Thai Curry:
Original recipe
½   broccoli head ( this goes into the green curry)
(250g) Stir fry veggies ( In microwave until defrosted)
1 packet of spring onion
2 cans of coconut milk (400ml each so 800ml)
2 chicken breasts
51 grams of green Thai paste
136 grams of rice (1 cup)   (get the rice on to cook asap)
Whole Green beans

Preparation time:
 10-20  mins
Cooking time:
10 to 30 mins
Serves:
Serves 4

Method:

  1. Cook time 10-30 minutes
  2. Cut chicken into pieces ( size?)
  3. Cut beans in half ( remember to cut ends off too)
  4. Cut spring onions into small rings (use 3 spring onions)
  5. Cooktop (hob) to medium temperature. Put a frying pan onto the hob
  6. Add a splash of oil to the pan
  7. Brown chicken in pan, add Exotic brand green curry paste. Stir
  8. Add coconut milk. Stir
  9. Add beans and spring onions. Mix gently
  10. Simmer (how long?) to cook chicken and vegetables, stirring every so often
  11. Cook the rice, don't overdo the rice.  Just want it soft not too soft.
  12. Check other vegetables are cooked also(this stir fry vegetable)
  13. Once all cooked serve green Thai Curry on rice.
  14. Garnish with chopped Spring onion
Why was my recipe chosen?
My recipe was chosen because Mrs Hindson and my group wanted to see what it was like and what it would turn out like.

How does it fit into the nutritional model of 'the dinner plate'?
Well, it bearly has fat, sugar or non-healthy foods.

What changes did we make during the 2 practicals?
We added capsicum and we left sauce in it.

Why did we make these changes?
We made these changes because it needed more flavour, colour and sauce.

What were the positives about the final practical?
Well, it was tastier, colourful and saucier.

What were 2 things I have learned in this semester?
I learned how to work better and quicker with a group, I also learned how to add more flavourful things into dishes.

Testing for hydrogen gas

Aim: To show that hydrogen gas is produced when a metal reacts with an acid

Equipment:
Test tube
Boiling tube
Retort stand
Wooden splint
2M Hydrochloric acid
Magnesium
Safety glasses

Method:
1. Attach the boiling tube upside down to the retort stand.
2. Add your sample of metal to your test tube. Pour 2ml of 2M Hydrochloric acid into the test tube.
3. Keep gently shaking/swirling the test tube until the metal is gone.
4.When you think the tube is full carefully remove the test tube.
5. Light a wooden splint and put it into the opening of the boiling tube.
The flame s go out with a loud pop.

Results:

Discussion:
Mg + HCL= Hydrogen
The metal was consumed by the reaction, a new product (gas) was formed. The energy was released by the reaction. When the metal dissolved it formed a gas and the test tube became warm.

Evaluation: The first few times it was not Succesful. We did not do it properly the first couple times so we had to improve the way we did things. We weren't fast enough so some of the Hydrogen gas escaped.

Crystals experiment 🕯

Aim: To find out how to form crystals with chemicals.

Equipment:
Copper oxide power
Sulfuric acid
50mL measuring cylinder
Two 100mL beakers
Bunsen burner
Tripod
Gauze mat
Funnel
Filter paper
Spatula
Evaporating basin
Stirring rod

Method:

  1. Add sulfuric acid (20 ml) to the 100 ml beaker, heat until near boil. After that, make sure that the bunsen burner is off so you don't burn anyone or anything.
  1.  After that, use a Spatula and add ( about the tip of the Spatula) copper oxide.
  1. Stir the solution for approximately 30 seconds.
  1. Continue to add copper oxide until it dissolves no more.
  1. fold the filter paper in half and then in half again and then place it in the funnel. add to the other beaker.
  1. Let the solution to cool down enough so you can carry the baker by the top. The solution MUST be hot still.
  1. Swirl the solution until all is mixed, then pour the liquid into the funnel with the filter paper in it. Let the solution filter through until there is no liquid left in the funnel. All liquid should be in the beaker.
  1. Rince the beaker that was used to boil the solution and fill the beaker with 50-60 ml of water.
  1. Turn the bunsen burner back on and place the water on the tripod and then place the evaporating basin on top of the beaker. Pour the liquid into the evaporating basin.
  1. Either the water or the solution needs to evaporate till half way then turn the bunsen burner off and wait for the evaporating basin to cool down.
  1. Once cooled down a move to a place where it would not be disturbed.
  1. Over the next few days blue, shiny crystals should appear.

Results:
Our crystals had a white powder-like substance on top as it was over boiled. They still look alright.

Discussion:
This takes about two hours to complete but it was fun. If I ever did this again, I would make sure it did not over boil.

chemical experiment 💥

Aim: To find out what happens when I mix chemicals together.

Equipment:
test tubes
lead nitrate
 potassium iodine
copper nitrate
 ammonium hydrate
sodium hydroxide
 silver nitrate
 iron chloride solution
potassium thiocyanate

Method:
Mix together

lead nitrate + potassium iodine

copper nitrate + ammonium hydrate

sodium hydroxide + silver nitrate

iron chloride solution + potassium thiocyanate

Results:

I mixed a clear colourless solution of lead nitrate and three drops of (a clear colourless) potassium iodide It turned into a yellow precipitate. It then made clumps of powder-like substance.

( blue and colourless)

I mixed a clear light blue solution of copper nitrate with three drops of a clear colourless solution of ammonium hydroxide.  When it reacted, it made a cloudy light blue solid (this is called a precipitate). When I added more ammonium hydroxide, it turned into a dark blue solution.

I mixed sodium hydroxide with three drops of silver nitrate  together and It made a chocolate brown colour and then it precipitated together.

I mixed Iron chloride with three drops of potassium thiocyanate and It turned into red blood-like substance. This solution did not precipitate.

Discussion:

When two solutions are mixed and a precipitate forms, a precipitate is an insoluble solid.  If the precipitate then dissolves into a new solution, this new product is called a complex ion. A precipitate is when a liquid turns into a solid.
