2. Ordinary means 'normal' pretty much, or nothing special.
Extraordinary means ' remarkable' features in this case.

3. Charlotte was not phased by the way August looked but Jullian sounded disgusted in the was August looked, Jack, didn't seem too fazed

4. It means someone 'innocent' in to a place where you are granted to be hurt/harmed.

5. I would sent August to school as his mum cant teach him everything, he needs to socialize.

6. August mum told him the previous year that the test he has handed was an IQ test but in fact it was a school test to enter him into the school. I think that white lies are  good nor bad.

7. A shiny smile is a fake smile.

8. When Julian asked August if he knew what an eraser was, also when Julian was being a smart ass.

What is Matariki?

MATARIKI

Matariki is a big cluster of stars in the sky. You can see it throughout New Zealand in mid-winter. According to the Maramataka (the Māori lunar calendar), the reappearance of Matariki brings the old lunar year to a close and marks the beginning of the new year. Hence, Matariki is associated with the Māori New Year.

History of Matariki:

Matariki is the Maori name for a group of seven stars known as the Pleiades star cluster.
Some people think of Matariki as a mother star with six daughters, and it is often known as the Seven Sisters. Others think that Matariki is the ‘eyes of the god’. When Ranginui, the sky father, and Papatūānuku, the earth mother, were parted by their children the god of wind, Tāwhirimātea, became he was angry, tearing out his eyes and hurling them into the heavens. Matariki appears in the northern sky of New Zealand, it also was a signal to the Maori that harvest season was around the corner.

Act Four, Scene One and two merchant of venice

What does the Duke believe Shylock intends to do?
He thinks that Shylock will keep up his bluff.

What does Shylock intend to do, and what reasons does he give for his decision?
He wants to get the one pound of flesh. In his own words, he says "But say it is my humour. Is it answered?" He's pretty much saying "Because I can, is that enough of an answer?"

Why must the law be allowed to stand (why can’t the judge dismiss this case)?
They need to uphold authority.

How do Lorenzo and Jessica gain the result?
They get half of Shylocks stuff.

What reward has Portia claimed and why is this significant?
Bassanio's ring, she made him swear to not sell, give away etc.

Portia tells Shylock ‘The quality of mercy is not strained’. How does she try to persuade Shylock to show mercy, how much mercy is she willing to show him (line 345-362)
Portia's guilt-tripping him in away. She's turning the tables on him. She's willing him to show as much mercy as he begs for.

A4S1 L 70-80. Antonio gives us three short images of how useless any attempt by Bassanio to save his life will be
What are they?
 - Telling the ocean to get smaller, Asking a wolf why he killed a lamb and made its mother cry, telling the pine trees on the mountain to stop when the wind blows through them what do they tell us about one of Shakespeare's interests -He has an interest in things to do with the Christian Bible.

Do you think this is an effective way of demonstrating the problem? -
Yes, he's comparing the situations quite well.
Each example is extreme and impossible, what influence does this have on how you expect the rest of the scene to develop.
You expect Antonio to be right, you expect everything to play out in Shylocks favour.
A4S1 L90-100, Shylock uses vivid comparisons when he wants to make a point.
What example does he use to illustrate the fact that the pound of flesh is his: ‘tis mine and I will have it’

Slaves. He uses slaves. He's saying that he's rightfully got that pound of flesh. It is much longer comparison than the three used by Antonio but do you think it is more striking/effective/convincing?
I think it's about the same. Both have very good points and comparisons.

Act Four Scene Two
What invitation does Portia refuse and why?
An invitation to dinner. Portia and Nerissa need to get home that night so they're home before the men
What does Nerissa plan to get, why do you think this is important?
Gratanio's ring she gave him. She wants to see if Gratanio will do the same as Bassanio
Do you admire Portia after these scenes, or do you find her actions cruel? Use examples to support your thinking.
A bit of both. I mainly admire her because of how powerful she comes through in this scene. She uses her knowledge to get what she wants and what she thinks is right.

    merchant of venis

    Scene Four

    1. What is Lorenzo’s opinion of Antonio? Lorenzo thinks Antonio is loyal and a good friend to Bassanio
    2. What does Portia tell Lorenzo she intends to do?While the men are away, she'll go away in hiding with Nerissa until they come back.
    3. What does she ask Lorenzo and Jessica to do for her and why?
Look after the house while she is away because Nerissa will be going with her and Bassanio isn't there either
    4. Why does Portia think Antonio and Bassanio must be alike? Portia thinks that friends who spend a lot of time together and really care for each other become similar people, so because Antonio and Bassanio are such good friends, they must be similar in personality.
    5. Why do Portia and Nerissa intend to travel dressed as men?To make sure no attention is drawn to them, to not let people know who they are.
    6. In A3S4 L 60-78, how does Portia describe the behaviour and attitudes of young men? They try to show off and lie about things they've done to make themselves look better.
    7. Does it seem likely that Portia is going to follow the expected behaviour of a wife?
Yes, mostly, as seen in previous scenes, she seems willing to be faithful and submissive to Bassanio
    Scene Five
    1. In his jokey conversation with Jessica, why is Launcelot against the conversion of Jews to Christianity?Because if every Jew converted to Christianity and started eating pork, the price of all things related to pork will go up.
    2. What is Jessica’s opinion of Portia?Jessica thinks Portia is a blessing, a goddess on earth. We know this as she says "Past all expressing. It is very meet, the Lord Bassanio live an upright life, for having such a blessing in his lady, he finds the joys of heaven here on earth."
    Character Study - Shylock
Make a list of the insults and names Shylock has been called in the text so far.
                        Devil, Misbeliever,
Cutthroat dog, A cur, a merry devil, A villain with a smiling cheek, a goodly apple rotten at the heart,
Find lines/quotes in the text that show Shylock’s hurt, his rage, his loneliness.

Do you think he cares more about losing the ducats or his daughter? Give evidence to support your thinking.

Shylock is powerless to get back his daughter or his ducats but Antonio is now in his power. Find the first mention of revenge. Do you think his thoughts of revenge are justified? Give reasons.

A3S1 lines 54-62. What sentiment is Shylock trying to express here, do you find sympathy for him here?

Choose one ‘Hath not..’ quote and explain it.
