Quail Island / Otamahua
Quail Island is south-east of Christchurch New Zealand.
the Maori used the island to collect seabird eggs.
It held people that were sick or had leprosy. They were also held for two weeks when they came to NZ just in case they had contracted a disease on their way here.
We have resources natural and not natural on the Island. They have made it predator-free and how it looked like when it was found.
The Doc has heaps of successes and problems such as its kinda predator-free as it still has rats and deer still come over. they have most of the native birds there and some trees, bush etc.
I love it at Otamahua as it is native and so interesting. The ride there was breathtaking.
When the Maori people first settled in Quail island it wasn't much use to them as there wasn't any water source except the beach but it was a good source of food
Later on, in early 1800 the Warder brothers brought the island and started a farm there. Unfortunately, they drowned not long after.
No one was occupying the island so it was used to quarantine people with illnesses like leprosy. It also was a good place to train dogs for expeditions to Antarctica. When steamboats were invented fewer people got sick and nobody needed the island.
