Maori Values

What is Mana?
- Mana is a status.
- You can gain Mana or lose it.
- It's mostly inherited.

What is Tapu?
- An object or person that is sacred.
- Tapu controlled how people behaved.

What is Utu?
- Often described as revenge.


How could these values cause conflict with Europeans?
-The Europeans wanted more power over the Maori
- The Maori had different beliefs than the Europeans

How were these values different from Europeans values?
- The Europeans only sacred object was the Bible and the Maori had multiple and im Guessing the European didn't understand or didn't want to understand.

Maori Religion

What is the idea of Mythology/stories in religion, and the role myths and stories play in society?

  • To help understand their cultures and beliefs
  • Educate people
  • To explain people the unknown
  • To spread storeys of our ancestors


What similarities are there between the myths and stories of Màori and the first British Missionaries?


  • They both had beliefs
  • Both had gods
  • Both were interested in trade
  • Both arrived on boats
Why would difference between Màori beliefs and English beliefs cause conflict?

  • Both believed strongly in their religion which causes conflict
  • Maori's were treated differently compared to the Europeans
  • Different morals/ believes
  • Different ways of worshipping gods
