Lemon battery

Equipment:
Orange
Lemon
Copper nail
Zinc nail
Voltmeter
Switch
Alligator clip
Knife
Light bulb

Method:

  1.  Grab your lemon and roll it around for a few seconds to create more juice.
  2. After that make a small cut on both ends of the lemon, it's important that the cuts are far apart as possible so nothing doesn't touch.
  3. Insert copper-nail at one end of the lemon and the zinc nail at the other end.
  4. You can now use the alligator clip and voltmeter!
  5. Now its a battery!

Discussion:

The reaction that is happening is called Redox (reduction-oxidation). We built a circuit out of lemons (and oranges), zinc and copper-nail, Aligator clips and a voltmeter. In the circuit, the electrons were able to flow around. The electrons were flowing anti-clockwise, from the zinc to the copper because zinc is more reactive so it lets go of more electrons. Zinc releases the negative electrons to copper and zinc builds the positives. Once the electrons move from the zinc, zinc now becomes zinc 2+. The zinc 2+ now move around in the lemon juice. once zinc loses the electrons, it doesn't want the electrons back, so it flows around in the lemon. Only negative charges can be lost and postitive charges cant be lost. Citric acid dissociates (brakes down) to give a positively charged hydrogen ion. These ions are electrolytes that can conduct electricity (electricity is the movement of charge). Therefore the lemons provide current and voltage.

Evaluation:
During the experiment, a lot of things went wrong such as the lemon nor the orange made the light glow. The highest volts we got up to was 0.7 volts.  We needed 2-3 volts for the light to glow. We don't know why it didn't work but we think that the lemon and the orange didn't have enough acidity for the electrons to build-up. Another factor is that we didn't clean off the rust very well. we could have waited for a few days for the lemon to gain more sourness to gain more electrons. Some of the electrons were lost when we cut the orange in half, some of the juice was lost therefore some electron were lost. To gain more electrons we should have waited a day or two for it ripen or to be overripe to get more juice and electrons moving.

Making Vegetarian Sushi

Vegetarian Sushi

How well did we work as a team?
This time our team worked well together, even though we were quite slow, we did it together.

what to improve on?
Well, I could improve my skills with making sushi. We could also work faster as a group.

What is the next step?
Next steps are to work faster and efficiently as a group. this week we are making pizza.

What are my thoughts on how we did the Vegetarian Sushi?
I don't like sushi and so I didn't eat it but my friend ate mine and they said they liked it.

NOTE: When sushi is made, it HAS to be eaten that day.

This photo of the sushi is what it looked like, sadly we didn't take a photo of our ones.

Screen and Device Usage in Our Class/ Whos More Addicted?

For the last week or so, our class have been learning about devices. We have been learning about the impact of new aged technology. Over the past weekend, most of us downloaded an app that counted the hours that we spent on our phones. If we were on another device we had to manually count the hours we spent on it. The recommended screen time for a teenager is 2 hours. Everybody in our class doubles that completely. The new age of technology is rotting our brains but devices are so adiccting.

Jam Drops

HOME ECONOMICS WEEK 3

How well did we work as a team?
Our team worked well but one member of our group didn't do a lot of work. We all had different jobs to do and we did it efficiently.

How did the product taste?
The Jam Drops were quite sweet but overall it was soft on the inside and crisp on the outside.

What did the staff think of them?
The staff really liked them.

what to improve on?
I think we need to improve how quickly we do things and how we work together as a group

What is the next step?
The next step is to work better with the group.

What are my thoughts on how we did the Jam Drops?
Well, they were alright, we could improve in taste.

Are humans to blame for certain animal extinctions?- ESSAY

Are humans to blame for certain animal extinctions? I believe that humans caused a lot of animals to go extinct for example there is the thylacine ( Tasmanian tiger). The full reason for then going extinct is unknown but part of their extinction was because humans hunted them because they were eating livestock. So basically we hunted them to extinction. The last known living thylacine lived in Hobart zoo for 3 years after being captured from the wild, it died on the 7th of September 1936. The thylacine is a great example of how humans drove them to extinction way before the technology we have now.

To be exact, humanity has wiped out about 60% of animal populations since 1970. What animals have gone extinct because of us you may be thinking? Well, there is the Thylacine, the Pinta Giant Tortise, New Zealand's South Island Kokako, The Dodo, Moa and many more. These extinctions are a result of potching/ hunting, loss of habitat and global warming. If we continue to hunt endangered animals for trophies and food, then we are going to continue to wipe out populations in mass. Do you want to be part of that? Or do you want to be part of the solution?

Factors that animals are facing because of us are saddening. We are either part of the solution or part of the problem. Because of us, animals are being wiped out because of climate change, poaching and loss of habitat. Why are they losing their homes? They are losing their home because us greedy humans that want substances like palm oil to make that chocolate that you like, that popcorn that is finger-licking good and that conditioner that makes your hair soft and shiny. Yes, we enjoy these luxury goods but do you know where it has come from and what animals it is causing to go extinct? No, not really.

What are my thoughts on animal extinction cause my humans? Well, by my investigating on the internet, there are so many things we could do but we aren't. Such things like palm oil are used in so many products that we can't get away from and sustainable things are more expensive. Plastic is everywhere, bottles, food packaging and straws. Straws are killing turtles and other plastic is killing our ocean wildlife. That affects me, you and your mum. I think that this is sickening and disgraceful in the way that a lot of us think that we can't do anything about it. In reality, we can make a change, I can make a change and you can make a change.

Did you know that 99% of endangered species are at risk from human activities, introduced species and global warming? This was an eye-opening essay to write and find out information, I hope we can find a way to slow down animal extinction. This persuasive essay explains what is happening and what needs to happen. Will you be part of the solution or part of the problem?
