Migration Creative Writing

After a hard day of work, I slowly but surely walk home. I noticed that the wind was blowing furiously
and droplets of rain ran down my body. A white sheet of paper flew in my face, I tumbled to the cold,
muddy and slushy muck. I stood up and brushed off the dirt from my once beige, silky gown.
I grab the piece of paper and I read it as I continued to walk home. It stated that there would be a ship
leaving on the 15th of March 1851 and will be going to a country called New Zealand. It also said that
it would take 3-4 months to sail to New Zealand, £4 pounds for steerage and £15 pounds for a cabin.
After I read this paper I shoved it into my pantyhose and was filled with excitement. After 20 minutes of
walking, I finally arrived home to see my husband Herbert so I could talk to him about my findings.
I pulled the paper out of my pantyhose and gave it to him. I quickly jogged to the powder room to
get dressed in my cotton night clothes. I raced out to see what Herbert would say, he said
“we will go to New Zealand and we will buy a cabin so we get better food and get treated better”.
I was delighted to go to New Zealand as there would be better working conditions I thought.
We had good jobs and good pay but there is a lot of pollution and diseases in London.
It was about 9:30 pm at night and only 4 days till departure so I decided to go to bed and get a
good nights rest. I woke up to a knocker-upper banging on the window like they did every morning.
Herbert and I got up and got ready for work, we were talking all morning about the journey ahead
of us in the next 3 days. I head off to work and I was trying to think of what to say to my superintendent.
I didn't want to work there anymore and that my husband and I were going to set off to New Zealand
in the next 3 days. As I approached work, I had every word in my head set up and what I was going
to say to my superintendent Linda. I had entered the midwives ward to seek Linda, I finally find Linda
and I tell her I'm off to New Zealand in 3 days. I also explained that I hadn't brought the tickets yet as
Herbert and I had to tell our workplaces that we are leaving. Linda wasn't too accepting of my actions
but she had to and she told me that if I was ever to come back that I wouldn't be allowed back and
then she fired me on the spot. Linda gave me all my money for that day and I left the midwives clinic
and walked home.

I hustled in the door of my house and packed up all of my belongings as I waited for Herbert to come
home. It was very emotional packing all the items that I owned and leaving my city that I called home.
As I teared up I thought of the new Opportunites that were ahead of me and all the new people I would
meet. Finally, Herbert arrived home to tell me that his superintendent was fine that he was leaving
and that he brought us the cabin for the ship and that we need to gather all our money and our
belongings for the ride over to New Zealand. I told him that I had started packing but not a lot as
I was a little upset. We took the next 24 hours to pack and say our goodbyes to our friends and
family members. It was finally the day that we left, we headed to a carriage that Herbert had hired
to take us and our stuff to the ship wharf. As we reached the wharf I noticed that there were a
lot of people and a lot of people. The poor people couldn't afford the cabins,
only wealthy people like us could afford one. The captain of the ship got all of the passenger's
attention and told us to start boarding the ship. He also applied that it would be a long ride on the ship
and that some people (mostly poor) would die on the ship because of the weather conditions and
the poor people will get leftover food and water. As we walk on the ship, a worker shows us
around the ship and into our cabin. We got special treatment as we were rich. It was around 5 pm
at this point when everyone is settled on the ship and then it starts sailing. Herbert and I were very
tired so we went to sleep without dinner. I woke up in the middle of the night feeling cold so I paid
a worker to get me a blanket as well as Herbert. I feel back to sleep and woke up again at 7 am,
I woke Herbert up as we could have our first meal of the day and on the ship. We were handed
bowls full of porage and one berry for breakfast than for lunch it was steak and for dinner,
it was roast chicken. We had that every day for 2 months and then all the cows were killed
and there was no more steak or anything for lunch so they resorted to lamb.
There had been a tally of 52 deaths on the ship at that point and Herbert started to come down
with a cold. It didn't worry us as there was a doctor on the ship but it got worse and worse.
As the 3-month mark hit for being on the ship, Herbert sadly died of smallpox.
He was thrown off the ship and I gathered all his belongings and gave it to the poor people in steerage.
For the whole 1 month of being alone, by myself with no Herbert my side I was scared,
I felt like I had nobody.

We had finally reached Christchurch New Zealand and as I was gathering all of my items and got
off the ship, I locked eyes with a Maori man that could speak  English.
I tripped on a rock and the Maori man ran to my assistance. He asked me my name,
where I came from and if I had a place to stay. I had no place to stay and
so Arepetere (the Maori guy) offered me to stay in his tent. As time went on we built our own house,
started our own family of goats and got married. I got over Herbert quickly but I still miss him
sometimes but I met the new love of my life. I began teaching English to the Maori elderly and children
that couldn't speak English. Arepetere and I became celebrities in New Zealand and became wealthy.
During this time we brought a slave and called her Betty, she helped us with the goats and cleaned our
house. We brought her from a new Store called Slave Mart, they came from all over the world and they
were presented well.

Improv

Today in drama the class did some improving of our improv. We did some games around improving and random topics that we came up with. It was pretty fun, I would defiantly do it again.
What is theatre sport? Theatre sports is an improving game that started in Canada. They pretty much took a lot of drama games and made it a competition.
