Act Three Scene Two Merchant of Venice

Why does Portia want Bassanio to delay his choice?
Just in case he got it wrong

What makes Bassanio choose lead over the silver and gold caskets? Find the quotes in the text to support your thinking.
Because the "beauty" of gold is deceiving.

What does Portia’s speech A3S2 L166-174 reveal about the expected roles of a woman in marriage?
She was expected to be dependant on Antonio because that's what they did back then.

What did Gratiano’s and Nerissa’s wish to marry depend on?
They had to get permission from Portia.

How does Portia know that the letter contains bad news?
Because of Bassanio's face went pale.

What help does Portia offer straightaway?
She offered 4 times the amount of money he owes to Shylock.

Why do we not expect this help to be successful?
Because Antonio said to Shylock he's a dog and also he said it behind Shylock's back.

Do you think Portia would still be in love with Bassanio if she knew he had lied about his wealth?
Yes, she fell in love with Bassanio even before they met.

Word Vomit

Computer, hungry, bear, book, lollipop, zoo

On Saturday my whole family drove to a zoo in Canada.

Yesterday my Mum and I went to the beach in a helicopter, we were going to have a picnic there.
In the picnic basket, there were five chocolate biscuits, sandwiches, yoghurt etc.

How are you feeling about your performance?
I feel like our group will try our best and even if we muck up we will be fine.

Act three, Scene one, The Merchant of Venice.

Act Three, Scene One

Why does Shylock assume Solanio and Salerio know of Jessica’s flight?
Because he knows that Solanio and Salerio are friends with Lorenzo and that group
so he thinks they would know where Lorenzo went with Jessica.

What is the second suggestion of misfortune for Antonio- find a quote.
That there is a rumour about another one of his boats sunk because it went past a place that's known for having a lot of shipwrecks. "Why, yet it lives there unchecked that Antonio hath a ship of rich lading wracked
on the narrow seas. The Goodwins I think they call the place—a very dangerous flat,
and fatal, where the carcasses of many a tall ship lie buried"

Who has been looking for Lorenzo and Jessica, how do we know?
Tubal has been getting information about where Jessica is.  We know this by the way he tells Shylock stuff about Jessica.

Where do Shylock and Tubal arrange to meet and with what purpose?
To sort their problems at the synagogue.

Scene nine Merchant of Venice

Scene Nine
What is the purpose of the rhymes in the caskets?
To make fun of and mock the choices of the suitors.
Why does the Prince of Arragon discard the golden caskets. What does his interpretation of the inscription tell us about his character?
Because it says “He who chooseth me shall gain what many men desire.” He believes that it may be that some people are as foolish as to not see past looks, the expensive look of the gold.

What is Portia’s reaction to Bassanio’s arrival?
She doesn’t realise it’s him, she believes it’s the messengers relative because of how highly they think of him

Scene Eight Merchant of Venice

Scene Eight
What double disaster has struck Shylock?
His daughter ran away, with a christian, and took some of his money and jewels.

Where did Shylock think Lorenzo & Jessica might be?
On Bassanio’s ship. (The villain Jew with outcries raised the Duke, Who went with him to search Bassanio’s ship.)

How did Bassanio and Antonio part?
With a short conversation and an affectionate handshake

What is the first suggestion of trouble for Antonio? Find a quote that tells you this.
Salarino says “in the narrow seas that part the French and English, there miscarried a vessel of our country richly fraught. I thought upon Antonio when he told me, And wished in silence that it were not his.” This means there was a sunken boat from Venice and he hopes it wasn’t Antonio’s

Scene seven Merchant of Venice

Scene Seven
Which casket does the Prince of Morocco think is worthy to contain Portia’s portrait. Use evidence of the text to justify your answer.
The gold one. He says “One of these three contains her heavenly picture. Is ’t like that lead contains her? 'Twere damnation To think so base a thought. It were too gross To rib her cerecloth in the obscure grave. Or shall I think in silver she’s immured, Being ten times undervalued to tried gold? O sinful thought!” Meaning that thinking that the lead and silver caskets were worthy of having Portia’s portrait in them was a really bad thing.

How is Portia feeling in A2S7 -at the beginning, -while the Prince is making his choice, at the end
At the beginning she’s partly nervous, while he’s making his choice, she’s annoyed with the process. At the end, she’s relieved.

What was Portia’s father trying to achieve by the use of the caskets. Does this seem to be working?

To see who is worthy of Portia. It’s not really working, because Portia doesn’t like any of them...

Scene six Merchant of Venice

Scene Six
How does Launcelot manage to tell Jessica that Lorenzo will be there that evening?
Through vague messages. He says to Jessica "Mistress, look out at window, for all this. There will come a Christian by will be worth a Jewess' eye." In short, that means, there will be a christian worth your viewing, referencing Lorenzo.

What does Jessica throw down to Lorenzo?
A box/casket thing with gold ducats inside.

Why is Antonio looking for Gratiano?
To tell him that the masque has been canceled

Act Two Discussion Questions:
In A2S2, Launcelot deceives his father. In A2S6, Jessica deceives hers, What does each of them hope to achieve?
Revenge and Freedom?

In A2S5 Lines 11-18 & 28-39. In both speeches Shylock is speaking to his daughter, Jessica. What is his attitude to her? Give supporting examples from the text.
Trusting but nervous and worried, “I am bid forth to supper, Jessica. There are my keys.—” " Hear you me, Jessica. Lock up my doors,”

In A2S5 Lines 11-18 & 28-39. What do Launcelot and the audience know, that Shylock does not? How does this show dramatic irony.

We, the audience, and Launcelot know that Jessica is planning on eloping. The dramatic irony is that while Shylock is concerned with his valuable possessions, it is his daughter that he is going to lose, and it’s her that he’s trusted his stuff with.

Scene five Merchant of Venice

Scene Five
Why is Shylock uneasy about going out for the evening? Give evidence from the text to support your thinking.

Launcelot told him they've been plotting things ("And they have conspired together.") and that there is going to be a masque he wasn't aware of. Also because he dreamed of money bags the past night, which was thought to be a sign of things not going your way ("There is some ill a-brewing towards my rest, for I did dream of money bags tonight.")

Scene four Merchant of Venice

Scene Four
How does Jessica get a message to her lover?
Through Launcelot, she gave him a letter to give to Lorenzo

How will she be disguised for the elopement?
She will be dressed a page boy

Scene three Merchant of Venice

Scene Three
What does Jessica think of her life at home? Give evidence from the text to support your thinking.
She hates it, she believes it’s a hell hole. She says “Our house is hell, and thou, a merry devil,” Meaning “It’s hell in our house, and you helped cheer it up, like a funny devil”

Which of Bassanio’s friends is Jessica planning to marry?

Lorenzo

Scene Two Merchant of Venice

Scene Two
Why does Launcelot want to leave Shylock? Give evidence from the text to support your thinking.

Because of their different values. Another reason is that Shylock treats Launcelot very poorly. We know this because he says, “the very truth is that the Jew, having done me wrong,”  which means, “the truth is that the Jew has done me wrong.”Why is Bassanio worried about taking Gratiano with him to Belmont?
Because Bassanio is afraid that Gratiano will so something stupid or idiotic and the blame will fall on Bassanio.

In lines 114-142...
Launcelot and his father are very anxious to find Launcelot a new job. They both want to impress Bassanio. This leads to a.
frequent interruptions.

  1. Here’s my son, sir, a poor boy-
    LAUNCELOT
Not a poor boy, sir, but the rich Jew’s man that would, sir, as my father shall specify—
(Their words go against each other)
  2. Not exactly sure of this one.

Dilution series ;)

Aim:

To make a dilution series to investigate the concentration

Equipment:

A potassium permanganate crystal
Six large test tubes
Tweezers
A plastic transfer pipette
A test tube rack
10 mL measuring cylinder.

Method:

  1. Place the six test tubes rack label the rack with numbers 1 - 6
  2. Using the measuring cylinder, fill the test tube 1 with 10 ml of water. Fill the remaining tube with 5 ml of water.
  3. Using your tweezers, add a single crystal of potassium permanganate to test tube one
  4. Gently has the test tube until the crystal has dissolved
  5. Using the transfer pipette, carefully remove exactly 5 ml from test tube one and pour it into test tube two.
  6. Rinse the transfer pipette thoroughly to ensure no purple solution remains.
  7.  Gently shake test tube two and repeat the transfer process, transferring exactly 5ml of solution f

SOLUBILITY EXPERIMENT

SOLUBILITY EXPERIMENT

Aim:
To investigate the solubility of baking soda, table salt and copper oxide to see which is the most soluble

Equipment:
100mL beaker, 100mL measuring cylinder, salt, baking soda, copper oxide, stirring rod, spatula.

Method:
  1. Fill the beaker with water
  2. Add a spatula full of baking soda.
  3. Stir the solution until it dissolves.
  4. Repeat step 2 and 3 until no more will dissolve.
  5. Record how many spatula fulls were added.
  6. Repeat the experiment with salt and copper oxide.
Results:

Salt:18 heaps
Baking soda: 7 heaps
Copper Oxide:0 heaps

Discussion:
The salt was more soluble than the baking soda as when we dissolved the solute in the solvent we were able to dissolve more salt than the baking soda. The solution went clear after stirring each spatula full until no more would dissolve. The copper oxide turned the solution black and would not dissolve, hence the copper oxide is insoluble in water.

Conclusion:
This experiment showed that some solutes are more soluble than others in a solvent such as water. This also showed that some solutes are insoluble, meaning they do not dissolve.

Making crystals

MAKING A COPPER SULFATE SALT

Aim: To produce copper sulfate salt by reacting copper oxide with an acid

Equipment:
Copper oxide powder, dilute sulfuric acid, measuring cylinder, 2x 100mL beakers, bunsen burner, tripod, gauze mat, funnel, filter paper, themometer, spatula, evaporating basin, stirring rod.

Method:
  1. Add 20mL of sulfuric acid to a 100mL beaker. Heat to 70degrees. Turn off your bunsen.
  2. Once heated, use a spatula to add pea sized portions of copper oxide. Stir for 30secs
  3. Repeat step 2 until no more dissolved.
  4. Fold filter paper and place in funnel. Place the funnel in the second beaker.
  5. Make sure your first beaker is cool enough to hold and then pour it into the funnel. Gently swirl and allow to filter through.
  6. Rinse the beaker and fill with 50mL of water and place on tripod.
  7. Place evaporating basin on top of beaker and pour some solution in.
  8. Gently heat until the solution has reduced by half.
  9. Take off heat and allow to cool.
Results and Discussion:
The acid quickly reached the required temperature of 70 degrees and it then took multiple portions of the copper sulfate before the solute was no longer dissolving and a very dark blue solution was present. After filtering the solution it became a light blue.
We then placed that solution in an evaporating basin
After reducing it by half we left it overnight.
The next day there were little blue crystals formed in the basin and no more solvent.

Conclusion:
This experiment involved dissolving a solute in a solvent to create a solution. We then filtered the solution and evaporated it until we were left with the solid again, in the form of crystals- a successful experiment!

Merchant of Venice

So far, this act has entailed a meeting with the Prince of Morocco and Portia. In previous parts, we find out that Portia is to get married to the person who selects the correct casket from the ones her father left. She has no choice from her suitors though she dislikes them all.

  • We have watched racial and religious tensions at work in A1S3. The Prince of Morocco opens A2S1 with another sensitive issue. What is it? Racism. He feels that Portia does not like him because he is coloured.
  • If Antonio loses his gamble, he must forfeit a pound of flesh. What must Portia’s suitors give up if they fail to win her? Their hand in marriage to any women."If you choose wrong.
  • Shylock practices ‘usury’. What is this? Lending money with extra interest.
  • Why do Shylock and Antonio hate each other? Because of their difference in religions and values.
  • What is Portia’s opinion of the Prince of Morocco- give examples.  She thinks as highly of him as she does her other people "Yourself, renownèd Prince, then stood as fair As any comer I have looked on yet For my affection." Meaning, "then you’d have had as good a chance to marry me as any of the suitors I’ve met so far, prince."
